TPO has become the default recommendation on a lot of the parapet-wall roofs we bid in Santa Fe, and altitude sun is a big reason why. Why TPO Fits This Roof Stock

Heat-Welded Seams and Ponding Water
The seam is where most single-ply failures start, and TPO's hot-air welded seam is stronger than an adhesive lap in the areas of a roof that see standing water after a storm. On a parapet roof where the canale is the only real drainage path, water often lingers longer near the scupper opening than building owners expect. A properly welded TPO seam in that zone holds up to that exposure far better than a taped seam that was never meant to sit wet.
We test seam welds during installation and again during any post-install walk, because a weld that looks fine visually can still be under-heated in a spot that will open up after a winter of freeze-thaw cycling.
Attachment Methods We Use Here
Not every roof gets the same attachment approach. Wind exposure, deck condition, and whether the building sits inside a historic overlay all factor into the decision.
- Mechanically attached, for decks with solid insulation and moderate wind exposure
- Fully adhered, for roofs where a cleaner low-profile finish matters, including buildings visible from the Plaza or downtown streets
- Induction welded, used selectively where fastener penetration count needs to stay low
- Ballasted, occasionally on larger flat commercial roofs with enough structural capacity for stone
Flashing the Parapet-to-Deck Transition
The parapet wall itself is usually the weak point on an older Santa Fe roof, not the open field of membrane. TPO flashing has to run up the parapet, tie into the coping cap, and terminate cleanly at every canale penetration. We treat that transition as its own scope item rather than an afterthought, because it is where 7,000-foot UV, monsoon wind-driven rain, and winter ice all concentrate their damage.
On buildings where the parapet coping is original adobe-style stucco rather than metal, we coordinate flashing details that do not require altering the visible parapet profile, which keeps the work out of historic design review in most cases.

Scheduling Around Monsoon Season
New TPO installation and welding work best in dry conditions, which makes the window between spring and the start of monsoon season, and again after it tapers off in September, our preferred stretch for larger jobs. Welding seams during an active downpour is not something we do, so we build monsoon variability into project timelines rather than promising a fixed date that weather can blow past.
For buildings that cannot wait, we phase the work into smaller sections that can each be dried in and welded between storm cells, which keeps a partially finished roof from sitting exposed overnight.
TPO Questions We Hear Often
Will TPO handle ponding water at our canale outlets?
The membrane itself resists standing water well, but ponding is really a drainage design issue. We evaluate canale sizing and slope alongside the membrane choice rather than assuming TPO alone solves a drainage problem.
How does TPO compare to the EPDM already on our roof?
TPO's welded seams generally outperform EPDM's taped seams over time, and the reflective white surface handles altitude UV better than black EPDM. Whether it makes sense to switch depends on your current membrane's condition and remaining life.
Can TPO go down without a full tear-off?
Often yes, as a recover layer over a dry, sound existing roof. We check deck moisture and structural load capacity first, since adding a layer changes parapet height at the coping line.
Does installing TPO trigger historic district review?
Only if it changes something visible from the street, like parapet height or coping profile. A membrane swap that stays within the existing roofline generally does not.
How long between recoats or maintenance checks?
